The
illustration (left) shows 2 new triads built on to the 2nd (II) and
the 6th (VI) degrees of the scale. The triads you will already know
are coloured in red (as the scale is) and the new triads are shown
in black.
These new chords are both minor triads (Secondary Triads). The
triads I, IV and V are major triads (Primary Triads) Here endeth the
1st lesson of harmony.

The upper octave (shown in brackets) is called a doubled root (or
Bass) and this is the first thing to consider as we continue on to
the next part - Harmonising in 4 parts (SATB).
