  • Rests are silences or spaces in music

  • they have the same value as their corresponding notes

1 0 Semibreve rest (alt. name - Whole-note rest) ....... most commonly has 4 counts*  (or beats in bar) *Can also be used as a rest for a 'whole bar' in any time signature. (whole bar rest)
2 0 Minim rest (alt. name - Half-note rest) .......  most commonly has 2 counts (or beats in bar).
4 0 Crotchet rest (alt. name - Quarter-note rest) ....... most commonly has 1 count (or beats in bar) This symbol (left) was once widely used to represent the crotchet rest but is not seen so often these days
8 0 Quaver rest (alt. name - Eighth-note rest)  ....... most commonly has ½ count  (or beats in bar)
16 0 Semiquaver rest (alt. name - Sixteenth-note rest)  ....... most commonly has ¼ count  (or beats in bar)
Dotted Rests:
Rests can have their value increased in the same way as notes can by adding a dot to the right of the rest
